Some amigurumi patterns ask for a whole weekend. This one asks for an evening on the couch. This little turtle comes together fast, uses just two colors of yarn, and — thanks to some clever construction — never requires you to sew the shell, head, or fins on separately at the end. Everything gets joined as you go, so once your last stitch is done, it's actually done.
Quick Overview & Materials
You'll be making four fins, a head, and a shell/body, and joining them together directly in your final rounds — no separate sewing session required at the end.
What you'll need:
- About 12g of Shell color yarn (Super Bulky / Blanket-weight yarn — something like Bernat Blanket or Sweet Snuggles Lite works well here).
- About 30g of Body color yarn (also Super Bulky / Blanket-weight).
- A 4.5mm crochet hook, or whatever size gives you a nice, tight amigurumi gauge with your chosen yarn.
- A pair of 12mm safety eyes (or a different size if you prefer — just make sure they're appropriate for the age of whoever's receiving this turtle, and consider embroidering the eyes instead if it's going to a baby under three).
- Polyfil stuffing.
- A tapestry needle, for closing pieces and weaving in ends.
- Scissors.
- A stitch marker.
Stitch Abbreviations Used (US Terms)
- MC / MR — Magic Circle / Magic Ring
- SC — Single Crochet
- INC / SC INC — Single Crochet Increase (2 SC in the same stitch)

Part 1: The Fins (make 4)
Using your Body color:
Round 1: In a magic circle, work 5 SC. Do not join — this piece is worked flat, back and forth.
Round 2: Chain 1 and turn. Work an SC INC in each stitch across. (10 sts)
Fasten off.
Make 4 fins total using this same two-round pattern.
A quick finishing note: on two of your four fins, weave the middle tail (the one from your magic circle) over to the outer edge, so it meets up with the tail from where you fastened off. On the other two fins, just leave the tails where they are. Don't worry about tucking these away permanently yet — every tail on every fin will end up hidden inside the shell once everything is assembled.
Part 2: The Head
Using your Body color:
Round 1: In a magic circle, work 8 SC. (8 sts)
Round 2: Work an SC INC in each stitch around. (16 sts)
Rounds 3–5: SC in each stitch around, no shaping. (16 sts)
Attaching the safety eyes: Place your safety eyes between rounds 2 and 3, spacing them roughly 5–6 stitches apart.
Round 6: Work an INV DEC in each stitch around. (8 sts)
Round 7: SC in each stitch around, no shaping. (8 sts)
Do not fasten off, and don't sew this closed — the 8-stitch neck opening you've just finished gets joined directly onto the body in the next section, so leave your yarn attached and set the head aside for now.
Part 3: The Shell & Body
Start with your Shell color:
Round 1: In a magic circle, work 8 SC. (8 sts)
Round 2: Work an SC INC in each stitch around. (16 sts)
Round 3: Work the sequence "SC in the 1st st, SC INC in the next st" around. (24 sts)
Rounds 4–5: SC in each stitch around, no shaping. (24 sts)
Round 6: Working in the Front Loop Only (FLO), SC in each stitch around. (24 sts) Change to your Body color before starting the next round.
Round 7: Working in the Back Loop Only (BLO):
- SC in the first 10 stitches.
- Flatten the head's 8-stitch neck opening so it sits level with the eyes, then attach the top 4 stitches of the neck to the next 4 stitches of the body using SL ST — this is what joins the head onto the shell without any separate sewing.
- SC in the remaining 10 stitches of the body. (24 sts)
Round 8 — Attaching the Fins and the Bottom of the Head:
- SC in the next 2 stitches.
- Attach the 1st fin (Right Back Fin): work an SC through the next 2 stitches of the body and the fin at the same time, joining them in one motion.
- SC in the next 3 stitches.
- Attach the 2nd fin (Right Front Fin): work an SC through the next 2 stitches of the body and the fin together.
- SC in the next 1 stitch.
- Attach the bottom of the head: work an SC through the remaining bottom 4 stitches of the neck and the body together.
- SC in the next 1 stitch.
- Attach the 3rd fin (Left Front Fin): work an SC through the next 2 stitches of the body and the fin together.
- SC in the next 3 stitches.
- Attach the 4th fin (Left Back Fin): work an SC through the next 2 stitches of the body and the fin together.
- SC in the last 2 stitches of the round. (24 sts)
Stuffing: Now's the time to stuff. Fill the head and neck firmly first, then start stuffing the shell and body, adding polyfil gradually as you work your way through closing the bottom in the next two rounds.
Round 9: Work the sequence "SC in the 1st st, INV DEC in the next st" around. (16 sts)
Round 10: Work an INV DEC in each stitch around. (8 sts)
Finishing
- Fasten off, leaving a short tail.
- Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle and weave it through the front loops of the remaining 8 stitches.
- Pull tight to close the opening completely, knot securely, and weave the end inside the turtle's body to hide it.
And that's a finished turtle, start to no-sew finish. This is a genuinely great pattern to keep in your back pocket for last-minute baby shower gifts — between the small yarn requirements and the fact that everything joins together as you crochet, you really can go from empty hook to finished plush in about an hour.
